It’s not just the summer sun than can cause damage to your vision. Make sure you protect your eyes against harmful UV rays all year round.

As soon as the sun breaks through, we all make a mad dash for the great outdoors. The first things we grab are sun lotion and our brand new swimwear, but many people forget that our vision needs as much protection against the sun’s rays as our skin.

The sun burns your eyes in the same way that the sun burns your skin. When you spend too long in the sun without protective eyewear your eyes can become irritated, gritty and sore. This is called photokeratitis and is a medical way of explaining that your vision has been caught out by the sun’s rays.

It’s not just the sun’s rays that can harm your vision and cause your eyes to feel sore and itchy either. Artificial sources such as tanning beds and laser machinery can damage your vision, as well as reflections from water and snow.

High quality sunglasses should block out 99-100% of UV radiation, screen out 75-90% visible light and be free from distortion. You won’t be able to find these attributes in every pair of sunglasses that you find though.

With this in mind, it’s important that you visit an established optician and discuss your eyewear requirements.  If you already wear spectacles, your sunglasses will need to help you see clearly. This may mean that you will require alternative lenses.

When you visit our cosy and personal practice, our friendly team will help you to find the sunglasses that best protect your vision and highlight your unique style. They’ll ensure that the sunglasses fit your face perfectly and give you lots of information on how to get the best out of them.

You’ll be able to choose from a wide range of designer eyewear from around the world, including popular sunglasses brand Ray-Ban.
